I’ve already covered How Much Does a Pug Cost Over it’s Lifespan, in this post we’ll dive into the specifics of the cost of ownership of a pug puppy. But first, if you’re thinking about getting a pug start here:
Pugs have become popular over the years for various reasons, and one of the most notable features of pugs is their adorable, wrinkly faces and expressive eyes. These features make them instantly recognizable and endearing to many people. Additionally, pugs are known for their friendly and affectionate personalities. Pugs quickly form strong bonds with their owners and become loyal companions. Additionally, they are generally good with kids and other pets, they’re pretty easy to train (they’re very food motivated!), which makes them an excellent choice for families.
Pugs are a smaller dog breeds, with the average size being about 14-18lbs. Thus, the recurring costs of owning a pug are less than owning a larger breed. However, pugs are often in high demand because of their distinctive looks, lovable personalities, and adaptability to different living situations. This makes them quite expensive to purchase… with stores (many of which I don’t recommend) charging $3000+.
If you’re wondering about the actual cost of owning a pug puppy, don’t worry because we’ve got your back! In this article, we will discuss how much a pug puppy costs whether you decide to buy it from a breeder or a pet store (adopting a pug is always an option too! However, younger full breed pugs can be hard to come by).
And note the prices of owning a pug puppy don’t end at the initial purchase. So, we will also talk about the costs associated with pug ownership, such as food, vet visits, etc. Let’s get into it!
The Cost of a Pug Puppy from a Breeder vs. The Cost of a Pug Puppy from a Pet Store
When buying a pug puppy, you will have two primary options. It’s either you will buy a pug puppy from a breeder or a pet store. These two options will allow you to buy a pug puppy to add to your family. However, be mindful that the cost and experience will vary significantly between these two.
Buying a pug puppy from a reputable pug breeder is what I would recommend. It’s because the pug breeder has likely invested a significant amount of time, money, and resources into breeding high-quality, healthy pugs. Additionally, pug breeders are often very knowledgeable about the breed. They can provide valuable information and guidance in owning a pug puppy. You’ll often get information, or will be able to see the parents too, which is a decent proxy on what your pup will grow up to look like.
On the other hand, buying from a pet store can be more convenient. Where I am in Vegas there’s dozens of pet stores around the city. But they (at least over here) often come with a higher price tag, many start at $3000+. They’re the middle man and they have to make money too.
And you’ll likely receive a pup that is more likely to have health issues, as you should be aware that pet stores often source their puppies from puppy mills. Puppy mills are known for their inhumane and unethical breeding practices, such as inbreeding, which can result in puppies with health problems and behavior issues. So, this can ultimately cost you more money in the long run.
The Cost of a Pug Puppy from a Breeder
On average, the cost of a pug puppy from a breeder can range from $800 to $2,000. Perhaps even higher if it’s a rarer color. Some breeders also charge even more for high-quality AKC championship winning bloodlines. Moreover, the cost can depend on some factors, like the reputation or location of the breeder, the coat color, health history, and the pug’s age. If you decide to purchase a pug puppy from a pug breeder, make sure to do your research on potential breeders thoroughly.
Remember that it is essential that you only work with responsible pug breeders. This way, you can ensure your new pug puppy is healthy and well-taken care of before you pick them up and go home.
The Cost of a Pug Puppy from a Pet Shop
Pet stores usually start at $3000, again they’re a middle man and have to make money on the transaction.
Moreover, buying a pug puppy from a pet store may not give you access to the same information or health guarantees as purchasing from a reputable pug breeder. Though I have seen some stores offer a health guarantee.
If you do choose to buy from a pet store, be sure to research the store. Ask plenty of questions to ensure that you are getting a healthy and well-cared-for pug puppy.
Associated Costs in Owning a Pug Puppy
After buying a pug puppy from a breeder or pet store, don’t expect that the costs will end there. You already know that owning a pug puppy can be a rewarding experience. However, you need to understand the associated costs that come with bringing a new furry friend into your home. Here are some of the primary expenses you can expect to have when owning a pug puppy:
Pugs are small dogs, and adult pugs weigh 16 lb. on average. After looking through the prices of best-selling brands such as Purina, Pedigree, and Blue Buffalo… depending on the brand you choose, the estimated cost of feeding a pug puppy through its first year is likely to be about $35/mo on average. And then maybe another $10-20/mo for dog treats. I personally opt for higher quality, higher protein food when they’re pups as they’re at the stage where they’ll grow the most.
In addition to food, you also need to purchase a few supplies for your pug. I’ve covered this extensively in these posts:
Pugs have a short, fine coat that requires minimal grooming. However, pugs are notorious shedders. So, you’ll also need to factor in the cost of grooming tools, such as a deshedding brushes, shampoo, etc.
Some breeders will do the first few round of shots, but you’ll likely have to do a few in the first year of ownership (here’s a puppy vaccination schedule)
I recommend searching for a “low cost dog vaccine clinic” in your area. They often have the best prices and don’t charge an exam fee. Which would take your costs from about $75 to $19 – what I paid for shots per visit.
I consider myself a pretty competent dog trainer, I think there are plenty of free resources online, and pugs are pretty easy to train since they’re so food motivated.
But that’s my personal opinion as many say they can be stubborn and difficult to train. You may need to invest in professional obedience training or behavior modification services to help your pug develop good habits and socialize with other dogs. Your local pet store (PetCo, Petsmart, etc., all offer dog training). Plenty of good independent dog trainers as well.
Final Words
Remember, the actual cost of a pug puppy is much more than just the initial purchase price. From food, supplies, grooming, and veterinary care to training, owning a pug puppy requires a significant financial investment for you as an owner. Definitely something to consider if you plan on getting a pug. However, if you are willing to commit, I’ve found the rewards of owning a pug to be immeasurable. Pugs are loyal, loving, and endlessly entertaining companions. They will bring joy and laughter to you and your family’s lives. By knowing the associated costs and budgeting accordingly, you can provide your pug with the care and attention they need to grow and become healthy!
