As a pug owner, I know firsthand the joys and challenges of having a pug as a furry companion.
Pugs shed, a lot.
So if you’re Googling around wondering what in tarnation is up with your pugs shedding… don’t worry, it’s absolutely normal.
These adorable little dogs are known for their quirky personalities and wrinkly, smooshed faces. But, as with any dog breed, pugs also have their fair share of challenges. One of the biggest challenges is managing their shedding.
Pugs are notorious for shedding, and if you’re not prepared for it, it can quickly become overwhelming (and pugs are not hypoallergenic so shedding also means a lot of pet dander!). But don’t worry. With a few tips, you can manage your pug’s shedding and keep your home clean and fur-free.
Here are 11 tips for managing your pug’s shedding:
#1 – Brush your pug regularly
Pugs are notorious shedders, and if you don’t stay on top of their grooming, their loose fur can quickly take over your home. Regular brushing is essential because it helps to remove loose fur before it has a chance to fall out on your furniture and floors. When you brush your pug, you’re removing the dead fur that’s trapped in its coat, which can prevent it from ending up all over your home.
Not only does regular brushing help to manage shedding, but it also promotes healthy skin and coat for your pug. Brushing stimulates the skin and distributes natural oils, which can help keep your pug’s coat shiny and healthy. Moreover, it helps to prevent mats and tangles, which can be uncomfortable for your pug and lead to more shedding.
I’ve used a few different brushes, and my favorite by far is the ZoomGroom by Kong, which I previously covered in my pug puppy supplies post. It doesn’t bother pugs like the metal ones, and it’s perfect for in and out of the bath.
#2 – Invest in a high-quality vacuum cleaner
Oh man. I had a cheap vacuum for the longest time. The minute I upgraded just a little to a “pet vacuum” it made all the difference.
As a pug owner, I’ve realized the importance of investing in a high-quality vacuum cleaner to manage my pug’s shedding. Pugs shed a lot, and their loose fur can quickly accumulate on floors, carpets, and furniture. If you don’t have a powerful vacuum cleaner, it can be challenging to keep your home clean and free of fur.
A high-quality vacuum cleaner is essential because it can effectively remove the loose fur that your pug leaves behind. Unlike a cheap vacuum that may only pick up surface-level dirt, a powerful vacuum can penetrate deep into carpets and upholstery, removing embedded fur and dander that can cause allergies and other health issues.
PS. If you’re renting, you might also want to consider a carpet cleaner, it will likely end up paying for itself as you’ll get more of your deposit back and bonus – your place will smell a lot nicer.
#3 – Use a lint roller on your furniture
Pugs are notorious for leaving their fur on every surface they touch, and furniture is no exception. That’s why it’s essential to use a lint roller to manage your pug’s shedding and keep your furniture looking its best. Using a lint roller is necessary because it can effectively remove loose fur embedded in your furniture.
When your pug sheds, its fur can quickly become trapped in the fibers of your furniture, making it challenging to remove with just a vacuum or brush. A lint roller is designed to pick up and remove loose fur, making it an effective tool for managing your pug’s shedding. So, if you’re struggling to keep your furniture clean and free of fur, try using a lint roller – you’ll be amazed at the difference it can make!
You could try the reusable (washable) lint roller, but I’ve found they just aren’t as effective as your regular lint rollers. They do make pet ones too, but I haven’t tried them to see if there is a difference.
#4 – Bathe your pug regularly
Regular baths can help to keep your pug’s coat clean and healthy, reducing shedding and keeping your home clean. It helps to remove loose fur and dead skin cells from their coat. When your pug sheds, the loose fur can get trapped in its coat, leading to mats and tangles that can be uncomfortable and cause more shedding. By bathing your pug regularly, you can help to remove this loose fur and prevent mats and tangles, which in turn can reduce shedding.
Regular baths can also help to promote healthy skin and coat for your pug. Bathing can help to remove dirt, bacteria, and other irritants that can cause skin issues, such as itching and scratching. Additionally, it can help to distribute natural oils throughout your pug’s coat, which can help to keep their skin and coat healthy and shiny.
I’d recommend a deshedding shampoo to add to your pug bathing routine.
#5 – Use a de-shedding tool
A de-shedding tool helps to remove loose fur from their coat, reducing the amount of shedding. The tool is specifically designed to remove loose undercoats without damaging the topcoat, which is essential for maintaining your pug’s healthy and shiny coat. Additionally, using a de-shedding tool helps to prevent mats and tangles, which can be uncomfortable for your pug and lead to even more shedding. Using a de-shedding tool also has benefits for your home. By removing loose fur from your pug’s coat, you’ll have less fur floating around your home and furniture, making cleaning much more manageable.
The FURminator is the industry standard here.
#6 – Keep your pug well-hydrated
When a pug is dehydrated, their skin can become dry and flaky, which can cause them to itch and scratch. This can further damage their skin and coat, leading to increased shedding. By keeping my pug well-hydrated, I can help prevent these issues and keep their skin and coat healthy.
In addition to promoting healthy skin and coats, adequate hydration is vital for overall health and well-being. Water is essential for regulating body temperature, aiding digestion, and transporting nutrients throughout the body. When a pug is appropriately hydrated, it’ll feel better and be more energetic and alert.
#7 – Feed your pug a healthy diet
Feeding your pug a healthy diet of essential nutrients can help promote healthy skin and coat. When a pug’s diet lacks the necessary nutrients, it can lead to dry, flaky skin increased shedding, and diarrhea. By providing your pug with a balanced diet, you can help ensure they receive the nutrients they need to maintain healthy skin and coats.
Additionally, feeding your pug a healthy diet can help maintain a healthy weight (and don’t forget the best pug treats!). Obesity is a common problem among pugs and can lead to various health issues, including skin problems and excessive shedding. By providing your pug with a balanced diet and monitoring their food intake, you can help prevent obesity and its associated health problems.
#8 – Consider a room with hardwood floors
Pug shedding can leave behind a lot of furs, and it can be challenging to keep carpeted floors clean and free of fur. However, hardwood floors are much easier to clean, as fur and debris can easily be swept or vacuumed. This makes it easier to keep your home clean and fur-free, which is essential for maintaining a healthy and hygienic living environment for your family and your furry friend.
Another benefit of hardwood floors is that they are less likely to trap allergens such as dust and dander, which can contribute to respiratory and other health problems. This can be particularly important for people with allergies or asthma, as hardwood floors can help reduce allergen levels in the home.
#9 – Cover your furniture
By using covers, you can protect your furniture from fur and other debris that can accumulate over time. Covers are easy to clean and maintain, and they can be changed out regularly to keep my furniture looking and smelling fresh. In addition to managing shedding, covering furniture can help protect it from other types of damage, such as spills and stains. This can be particularly important if you have young children or pets that like to jump on the furniture.
Of course, covering furniture may not be the best option for everyone. It can be challenging to find covers that fit well, and they may not be the most aesthetically pleasing solution. However, for those looking for an effective way to manage pug shedding and keep their furniture clean and protected, covers can be a great option.
#10 – Keep your pug away from allergies
Environmental factors such as pollen, dust, and mold can cause allergies. In addition, some pugs may have food allergies that can contribute to shedding. By keeping your pug away from allergens, you can help reduce the severity of his shedding and keep him healthy and comfortable.
To keep your pug away from allergens, take a few simple steps. First thing that you should do is to try to keep your home as clean as possible. Vacuum regularly, dust surfaces, and wash your pug’s bedding frequently to minimize allergens in the air. Also, use air purifiers to help filter out any potential allergens.
#11 – Don’t stress too much
Shedding is a natural process for dogs, and while it can be managed, it’s important not to stress too much about it. To avoid stressing yourself out over pug shedding, remind yourself that it’s a natural process and that you can take steps to manage it. Please focus on the positive aspects of owning a pug, such as its loyal and loving nature, rather than the shedding.
Also, take care of yourself and manage your stress levels. When you’re feeling stressed, take a break and do something that relaxes you, like going for a walk or practicing yoga. By taking care of yourself, you can better take care of your pug and manage his shedding without becoming overly stressed.
As a pug owner, managing your pug’s shedding can sometimes feel overwhelming. However, with the 11 tips stated above, you will find out that it’s entirely manageable and even enjoyable to care for your furry friend. By following these tips, you will realize that shedding is not a source of frustration but another part of your pug’s natural process.
In the end, taking care of your pug’s shedding will not only help you keep a cleaner home but will also strengthen the bond between you. The love and companionship of owning a pug are well worth the effort it takes to manage their shedding.
